A new approach to sleep

It could be that she’s teething  – or simply that she’s 10 months old and totally ON FIRE about being alive and getting into everything…now! Either way, we’re trying new and inventive ways to encourage Ms Frijolita to sleep through the night.  Two nights ago, she woke 5 – count ’em, 5 – times.  Each time, I went over and held her…didn’t pick her up….just held her and sang to her and massaged her body.  Each time, I stayed with her til she was asleep or almost asleep.  It usually took between 3 and 15 min, but I could feel the difference in her little body – how much more relaxed she was.  Hoping to teach her what it feels like to be soothed, without having to nurse.

Last night, she woke once, at 4.  I soothed her for a while and nursed b/c she’s usually hungry at this hour.  Probably should have given her the bottle instead, but was too tired to think of that in the moment. Will try that tomorrow.

Boy do I hate “cry it out.”

Something very strange happened today.  Our little heroine had a super-sized freakout, for no apparent reason.  She is in this major growth spurt – nearly standing, scooching all over tarnation, clapping, putting things IN boxes rather than dumping them all over.  She is also perhaps not coincidently getting totally impatient with everything.  Wants to sit – no stand – no tip over the garbage can – no sit. Lather, rinse, repeat.  She has these insanely sweeping mood swings, wherein she’ll be totally giggly and suddenly – WHAM – she’s a pterodactyl mawing and screeching and yowling at the top of her lungs.

She screeched  through her afternoon nap today and laid some of the most immense, glistening poopoos I’ve ever seen. (Including one IN the bathtub, that C had to fish out manually.)

I have no idea what happened, but she’s sleeping like a bab  er, uh, log for now. I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus.

Sleep habits

Behavior drifts towards a norm. In other words, habits are hard to break.  It has been incredibly difficult to get the bug to sleep on her own – without nursing.  Furthermore, she wakes 1-2x a night and wants to nurse.  Is this comfort, like many pediatricians say? Or is she genuinely hungry, which is what the results of our experiments would suggest?

Either way, we’re back to nursing her down.  She knows how to sleep without it, but recently is not so interested in that.

Parenting a sick kid: #1 in a series

The bug has been sick for the better part of the last 3 days.  Not the scary, run-to-the-hospital kind of sick, but just lots of phlegm and awful hacking cough.  Her spirits seem good, and she has no fever. But man, she is coughing – like a lot.  And not sleeping.  And this of course means WE are not sleeping.  Which might not be terrible when we were 23, but is killin me at 44.

How do other parents out there deal with it when you and your partner have big differences of opinion on issues of child rearing?

It seems C and I are back in Square One with the issue of sleep and overstimulation. Neither of us have good filter for what’s going on with R because we’re so busy being polarized in our beliefs…
