Z-Trip!!

Who knew leaving the house could be so awesome! OMG KT and I saw Z-Trip last night and it positively RULED! He played at 1015 Folsom, which has been remodeled since I was last there a hundred or so years ago, and it felt like a completely different place.  Of course, we were not in the door 20 seconds before I ran into an old clubbing friend from my mis-spent dancing youth.

The crowd was really cool – nobody had attitude – everyone was just having a good time.  I felt like the old cougar lady shakin it up with the kiddos.  But the kids were so down-to-earth and friendly and accepting.  The cougar thing was my trip – not theirs.

Good Lordy, it felt good to really dance.  Z-Trip’s music is really pretty intense.  He’s got this insane amalgamation of samples from the last 40 years of musical history, and matches keys, timbres, even lyrics to come up with some very playful and ROCKIN results.  There was some nice electro going on in the front room, too. Oh man, must….leave…house…more…often…

Last minute Xmas shopping

This year, with the economic downturn and all, it’s actually turning into a blessing to be so disorganized.  I am finding retailers are falling all over themselves to offer discounts, free shipping, and other incentives at the last-minute.

In years’ past, I have spent hundreds of dollars by this point, most of it well in advance, on sale, etc.  But this year, with no income and a baby, the thought of going out shopping, well, something that never entered my mind. So here I am, with NO shopping done WHATSOEVER, combing the interwebs, scraping for deals.

1800flowers has a good one – promo code M99 will get you free shipping.  Many of their plants are already discounted.  Etsy has some good stuff, too. Any other tips? Please post ’em for the broke and overwhelmed.

Freecycle is your friend

Okay, I cannot get enough of Freecycle.  Yes, there are ten-gazillion emails a day.  And yes, some of the stuff that’s given away is probably a public health hazard.  But if you know what you’re looking for, you can find some pretty amazing – and useful – crap.

It’s brilliant.  You join a yahoogroup for your area.  People post whatever they want to give away, along with their general location.  If you want the aforementioned crap, you write the poster directly, arrange a pickup time, et voila! You are the proud owner of a new article of crap.

I have gotten diapers, toys, a new cellphone charger. You can also find holiday decorations, food (!!!) and pets (??!) There are some serious freaks on Freecycle both as “offerers” and “takers.” But hell, if it’s preventing even half this stuff from hitting a landfill, then it’s a-okay in my book.
